Former NMRA Pure Street Racer Drew Lyons has chalked up an impressive CS record in a short time, with 3 semi-final finishes and 1 runner-up in his first five races. With rapidly improving ETs, and help from NMRA Real Street Champion Bruce Hemminger, he’s a constant threat for the winner’s circle.
Drew’s ride is a 1988 LX Coupe he bought when he was 17.
Shortly after purchasing the car, he discovered it was a former Indiana Highway Patrol SSP Mustang. With help from friends, he swapped the stock AOD for a T-5 and wheeled the car as a daily driver in college. The transformation from street car to race car was gradual, starting with grudge nights at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Drew entered the car in NMRA competition in Open Comp in 2005 before the jump to Pure Street in 2008. He raced off and on until the class’s demise in 2011.
Intrigued by the challenge of NMRA’s crate motor class, he brought the car out of semi-retirement in 2013 to run Coyote Stock. He says “the sealed engine allows time and efforts to be focused elsewhere. This isn’t going to be a class where the biggest wallet always wins.“
